The event that set of the First World War took place in Sarajevo, Bosnia's former capital. A Bosnian student called Princip(普林西普) assassinated Archduke Francis Ferdinand(斐迪南大公), the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, and his wife Sophie on June 28, 1914. As Princip was a member of an anti-Austrian secret society in Serbia, Austria-Hungary accused Serbia of complicity in the assassination. In fact, she wanted to use the event as an excuse to crush Surbia in a war. After the Sarajevo Incident, Austria-Hungary asked Germany for help. On July 6, the German government announced that it would give unconditional support to Austria-Hungary in dealing with Serbia. Sure of Germany's support, Austria-Hungary sent a 48-hours ultimatum to Serbia on July 23. In the ultimatum, Austria demanded that Serbia: ~ put down all anti-Austrian activities; ~ dismiss all anti-Austrian officials; ~ let her officials enter Serbia to see that the demand were carried out. Serbia rejected the last demand because it infringed on her sovereignty. Although Germany believed that Serbia's reply was satisfactory, Austria-Hungary did not think so as she was determined to crush Serbia. Austria-Hungary turned down Britain's proposal to solve the incident at an international conference and declared war on Serbia on July 28, 1914. The Austro-Serbian War started. Two days after the war started, Russia mobilized her army in support of Serbia. To stop Russia from helping Serbia, Germany demanded Russia to demobilized. Hearing no reply, she declared war on Russia on August 1. She also demanded that France, Russia's ally, remain neutral in the case of a Russo-German war. When France did not reply, Germany declared war on France on August 3. To avoid a two-front war, Germany planned a defeat France before turning against Russia. As the Franco-Belgium. That is why Germany declared war on France and attacked Belgium on the same day. Germany's attack on Belgium broke the Treaty of London (1839). Britain and the other powers signed the treaty to guarantee Belgium's neutrality. Therefore, Britain sent an ultimatum to Germany, demanding immediate withdrawal from Belgium. Hearing no reply, Britain declared war on Germany on August 4. Of the five major European powers, only Italy stayed out of the war. The Austro-Serbian War now developed into a general European war. It soon spread into a world war involving 28 countries as non-Eurpoean powers joined the war.
